Abstract:

Contains correspondence written between George W. Ellery, and his wife, Mary Goddard Ellery, William Ellery, Richard Henry Dana Jr., E.T. Channing, and David Wood. Correspondence concerns William Ellery's schooling, his early career aboard ship, a poem on the death of President William Henry Harrison, a recommendation for William Ellery's service during the Civil War, and documents concerning Christopher Ellery's death. Also includes a history of the sons of George W. Ellery.

Note:

George W. Ellery born 24 Dec. 1789 in Newport, R.I. to Declaration of Independence signer William Ellery and second wife Abigail Cary. He married Mary Goddard 13 Nov. 1825. Their first two sons, William and Christopher Ellery served on various ships in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Christopher Ellery died on an island of Maui 21 June 1851. William Ellery married Sarah Frances Fitzgerald 23 May 1858 in San Francisco. William Ellery served the Union as a Captain during the Civil War. George W. Ellery died 26 Jan. 1867 in Newport, R.I. It is unknown when William Ellery died.
